The story shifts away from Shell Scott's usual Los Angeles backdrop to Mexico. Scott is summoned south of the border by his old friend, Amador Montalba. He is tasked with protecting and investigating a blackmail plot targeting the young wife of General Lopez, a prominent anti-communist political and military figure.
As Scott digs deeper into the blackmail scheme, he uncovers a massive, rampant crime wave and a sinister network of political conspiracies. The stakes escalate heavily when he realizes that local police elements are corrupted and deeply involved in the scam. Along the way, he crosses paths with an eclectic cast of characters, including an American scientist named Dr. Jerrold Buffington—who is working on critical disease vaccines—the scientist's beautiful daughter Susan, and an alluring woman named Monique Durand.
True to the classic pulp style of the Richard S. Prather series, the novel blends high-punching violence, gunplay, and narrow escapes with Scott’s signature humor, love for tequila, and charm around beautiful women. Scott must ultimately untangle the web of corruption, outsmart deadly killers, and deliver his own brand of justice south of the border.
