Moon Pilot, originally published as a serialized magazine story and a 1960 novel titled Starfire by Robert Buckner, is a lighthearted space-race story. The narrative follows Air Force Captain Richmond Talbot, a space scientist who inadvertently "volunteers" for the first manned mission around the moon. Before he launches, he crosses paths with Lyrae, a mysterious young woman who seems to know everything about his secret mission. While the U.S. military and federal security agents immediately suspect her of being a foreign communist spy during the height of the Cold War, Lyrae reveals she is actually a beautiful alien from the planet Beta Lyrae.
