The novel is deeply inspired by Morton Warnow’s real-life experiences. During World War II, Warnow served as a B-17 waist gunner, was shot down over Germany, and spent time captured as a Jewish American Prisoner of War (POW) in Stalag Luft I. 

The book follows a group of young, green soldiers thrust into the harrowing realities of combat and captivity. Its overarching premise captures their transformation under extreme duress: "They were kids. The war made them men. The Nazis did their worst to turn them into animals."
