The book is a sympathetic, authorized account of Edgar Cayce (1877–1945), famously known as America's "Sleeping Prophet". The author, Thomas Sugrue, was a skeptical journalist who lived with the Cayce family while battling debilitating arthritis, eventually becoming convinced of Cayce's gifts after receiving medical readings himself.
