Danger in the desert…

Alan Scholefield revives the 1904 revolt of the Herrero nation against the German colonizers of the Southwest Africa, depicting one of the bloodier, more harrowing massacres in African history.

Andrew Black, the English sub-inspector, abandons his job to enter into partnership with Kurt von Steinberg. Black has saved the life of Matthew Southgate, who he despises and soon banishes him along with some of the early Herrero refugees from the British province. They meet again however, in German territory at the Baron yon Steinberg’s imitation medieval castle...

Black is forced into the assault on the Herreros as the Germans attempt complete annihilation of the tribe, whilst Matthew becomes a Herrero defender.

Through scenes of horror and terror, Scholefield depicts this bloody battle against the backdrop of the unrelenting desert. Each part begins with a quote from Adolf Hitler, becoming a clear prelude to
Mein Kampf.

Alan Scholefield was born in 1931 in Cape Town, South Africa. After leaving university he became a journalist and travelled widely in southern and central Africa, Europe, and America. He now lives in Hampshire with his wife and has three daughters. Most famous for his Macrae and Silver series, Scholefield has also written other novels, including Venom, which was made into a film in 1981.
