The story begins in London with Tarzan’s teenage son, Jack Clayton. Jack loves the jungle and wild animals, but his parents try to keep him away from his father's old life.
An old enemy of Tarzan named Alexis Paulvitch seeks revenge. He brings a trained ape named Akut to London. Jack sneaks out to see the ape, discovers he can speak the ape language, and befriends him. Paulvitch tries to trap and kill Jack, but Akut defends the boy and kills the villain. Scared that he will get into trouble for the death, Jack flees to Africa by ship, taking Akut with him.
