The story takes place during the tense Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
- The Rogue Order: An American Air Force general named Jack D. Ripper goes completely insane. He believes a wild conspiracy theory that communists are poisoning the water supply. Using a special emergency loophole, he orders a fleet of nuclear bombers to attack Russia.
- The War Room Chaos: Inside the Pentagon War Room, the US President meets with his advisors to stop a global war. They try frantically to guess the secret code needed to recall the planes. The President even invites the Soviet Ambassador into the room and calls the Russian Premier on a "hot-line" to apologize and help shoot down the American planes.
- The Doomsday Machine: The situation turns hopeless when the Soviets reveal they have built a "Doomsday Machine". It is a secret computer system that will automatically explode and destroy all life on Earth if Russia is hit by a nuclear bomb.
- Dr. Strangelove Arrives: Dr. Strangelove, a wheelchair-bound former Nazi scientist, explains how the machine works. He suggests a bizarre plan to save humanity by hiding deep underground in mine shafts with a specific ratio of men and women to rebuild the population.
- The End: One rogue bomber manages to bypass the defenses and drops its nuclear payload. The book ends as the Doomsday Machine goes off, spelling the end of the world.
