The tenth album in Hear Music's ongoing series of albums devoted to new music from established acts (usually the more independent ones) and music old and new from relative unknowns, this album features leanings toward '70s singer/songwriter aesthetics and bits of country. Superproducer Daniel Lanois opens the album with an item sounding mildly like Dylanthe Jayhawks contribute an older-sounding work, and Yo La Tengo bridges the gap between old and new with a soothing piece from their newest album, Summer SunCat Power and Nada Surf each contribute a bit of rock followed by some relaxed pop and Americana from New York's Clem Snide and M. Ward, full of lyricism. Gillian Welch continues the lyrical emphasis with an essentially solo sound, continued by Milton Mapes andJosh Ritter, both relative newcomers to the roots rock and singer/songwriter camps. Bits and pieces fly in from the indie scene, the roots scene, the songwriter scenes, and even bits of bluegrass and jazz, all hitting in a relatively consistent manner. As with the other installments in the series, the album goes a long way in introducing some new talent to the listener, with the alt rock movements forming the core and other "alt" sectors filling in the gaps.
